„Eventide“

from the gallery of Andrew Paranavitana
Description:

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, more commonly knows as The Blue Mosque, in Istanbul, Turkey.
This incredible piece of Islamic architecture sits as the biggest and most commonly visited mosque in Istanbul, by tourists and locals alike. During prayer time, no photography is allowed inside. Luckily, I visited outside these hours.
The mosque was built in the early 1600’s as compensation for their failings in their wars throughout Persia. It has six minarets, four of which can be seen in this image. The interior walls and ceiling are lined with over 20,000 ceramic tiles. Windows and chandeliers of candles were designed and placed to maximise the use of natural light.
The mosque was opened to the public in 1617 and has since become one of Turkey’s biggest pulls for tourism.
