„Key Deer Portrait“

from the gallery of John Bailey
Description:

The key deer only live in the Florida Keys. They were nearly extinct in the 1950's dwindling to an estimated 25 deer!. The population now is estimated at between 300 to 800 deer. The key deer remain on the endangered species list and a National Key Deer Refuge has been established in Big Pine Key and No Name Key. Road speed limits have been lowered in many parts of the lower keys and are strictly enforced. Even with these steps, an estimated 30-40 key deer are killed each year by automobile collisions.
