An elusive male American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) hopes the camouflage tones of his streaky feather pattern will help him blend into the vegetation at the edge of a freshwater marsh. These secretive herons are adept at the art of concealment, and often stand erect to blend in with reeds. It’s springtime in the wetlands and this gorgeous male has come out of hiding to drum for a mate.
