Das heutige Steintor wurde 1574 bis 1577 im Renaissance-Baustil errichtet an der Stelle eines früheren, älteren Stadttores. Es war Bestandteil der historische Rostocker Stadtbefestigung mit Stadtmauer und 22 Toren. Es ist das südliche Haupttor der Stadt. Von ihm führt die Steinstraße direkt zum Markt mit dem Rathaus und der Marienkirche.
