„Sinking The Tirpitz“

from the gallery of James Biggadike
Description:

November 12th 1944, Lancasters of Nos 9 and 617 Squadrons fly from Lossimouth. The target was the Tirpitz. There were no defending fighters. One Lancaster was shot down as the ships AA guns and flak canons opened up. The first bombs dropped narrowly missed the target, but then, in rapid succession, came three direct hits. A column of steam and smoke shot up to about 300 feet and within a few minutes the ship had started to list badly.
