Harpers Ferry is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia meet. It is the easternmost town in West Virginia. The town is known for John Browns raid and the Civil War. The Civil War was disastrous for Harpers Ferry, which changed hands eight times between 1861 and 1865. Behind and above the railroad trestle is St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church. The original church was built in 1833 and was the only church in Harpers Ferry to escape destruction during the Civil War. It was extensively remodeled in the 1890s.
