„Tosques Wine Vats, Catalonia“

from the gallery of Marc Garrido Clotet
Description:

Stone wine vats are quite common in Catalonia. However, it is less common to find them near the vineyards. The ones in the photograph are part of the vats of the “Valls del Flequer” (Flequer’s valleys).

These wine vats were built of stone with ceramic tiles covering the walls inside to seal the liquid. This particular set was able to store about 36,000 liters of wine, about 9,000 liters in each one.

The vats have small dry stone huts built in from of them, where farmers would seek haven from the weather, store their tools, and sometimes stay for the night.
