Description:

This image is a view of the Gulf of Mexico by looking through a cannon opening in Fort Jefferson at the Dry Tortugas. When this fort was active the soldiers found the views beautiful but the duty was miserable. Heat, insects, disease and lack of water belied the scenic vistas. The fort is located on a small, waterless islands 60 miles of the coast of Key West.
