At the north end of the sweeping bay at Palolem Beach is a small island covered in coconut palms, which is known locally as Monkey Island. When the tide is low, it is possible to walk to the island. Here the island is reflected in the shallow water covering the sand, as the tide recedes. Palolem is in the south of the favourite holiday state of Goa in southern India. Palolem attracts a good mix of domestic, Indian, tourists; holidaymakers from Europe; and backpackers and other long-term stayers.
