The memorial here at the head of Loch Shiel is to commemorate that on the 19 August 1745, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (aka "Bonnie Prince Charlie") raised his standard here. This was a very significant moment because by raising the standard he was formally claiming the Scottish and the English thrones in the name of his father James Stuart ('the Old Pretender')
