Only signs and memorials give away the fact that this beautiful, pastoral area was once deadly ground. On September 17, 1862, in
three hours of combat, 5,500 soldiers were
killed or wounded in this area and neither side gained a
decisive advantage. A visit to the National Battlefield of Antietam brings awesome sights and sobering emotions.
