A lot of things come to mind looking at the incredible sculptures by Kate MacDowell. Delicate, cute, creepy, shocking and heart-breaking are only a few. American artist Kate MacDowell is an amazing sculptor mainly working with the porcelain medium. Every piece is hand sculpt out of porcelain in a very time/labor intensive process.
Strikingly beautiful, her works are very thought provoking. Pulling inspiration from environmental degradation, mythology, art history and other disciplines, Wilson says in her artist’s statement, “I see each piece as a captured and preserved specimen, a painstaking record of endangered natural forms and a commentary on our own culpability.” The subjects of her sculptures range from delicate autopsies of birds, rabbits, etc. to a specimen’esque views of internal human organs.
